MANAGING  FOR SUCCESS – A QUALITY MANAGEMENT APPROACH

Self-assessment

An organization should use self-assessment to determine its level of success, identify improvement opportunities, set priorities for improvements, and establish action plans.

The results of an organization's assessments should be a valuable input into its management review process; consequently such assessments should be conducted periodically.

The completion of a self-assessment should be recognized as an important step in identifying opportunities for the future development of the organization

The information gained from such a self-assessment should be used to stimulate comparisons and shared learning throughout the organization, between its processes and (where applicable) between its different units, to identify opportunities for improvement. It should also be used as an input into the planning of future assessments.

For ease of understanding and communication, the results of assessments should be presented in a way that gives a quick visualization of the organization’s success level.

This will assist in the identification and prioritization of opportunities for improvement, as well as in identifying those that can yield the maximum improvement at the lowest cost. The consistent use of this type of presentation will present an ongoing illustration of the organization’s progress.
